Day 2 – Soul Searching in Gompas

We started our second day of the trip with heavy breakfast, as we look forward to visiting four monestries in and around Leh namely Hemis, Thiksey, Shey and Stok.
Hemis Monestry is situated around 40 Km from Leh town. The road that led us to Hemis goes beside Indus River that is considered to be sacred as Indus water is believed to be coming directly from Glaciars of Mount Kailash. On the way we saw a huge arid barren land on the left side of the road as we stop for taking some snaps there. Our driver told this was location where a song named “Dil Dance Maare Re” was shooted from a forgettable movie called Tashan. After travelling for another 40 minutes on road we reached an isolated village in the middle of mountain in all directions locating Hemis Gompa.Locationwise perhaps this was the best Gompa in Ladakh.Monestry in the middle of mountain in all direction was very panaromic and picturesque. The mesuem inside monastery also has a rich collection of numerous valuable artifacts and ancient relics. After spending some time in Museum and inside monestry we moved towards our next destination Thiksay.

(Inside Hemis Monestry-Can't remember what we were watching so keenly)

Thiksay is perhaps the most famous and photographed Monestry in Ladakh known outside. I remember Havels used this monestry in one of its advertisement. It is situated on top of a hill that is easily visible from distance when you are in road. It is noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. We climbed on top of the monestry. The view from here was very serene and the magnitude of Ladakh valley was at its full fury. The vast expanse and beauty of land propelled Suresh and me to take snap with trumpet there. We carried the trumpet in our sholdier for a snap and had to face brunt from a lama sitting there. He told us to respect these things as these are used for religious purpose. We appologised and left the place silently.

Our next stop was Shey Monestry that was incidently also a palace. This monestry is kind a deserted and renovation work was going on when we went there. We left this place early for our next destination, Stok Monestry. We didn’t went inside stok monestry as by this time we started feeling all monestries from inside are same. But the breathtaking view of Ladakh vally from the restaurent here was amazing. The vast expense of grand Leh valley was at its best seen from here. We spent handfull of time here taking snaps and having snacks. We left for Leh from here in the evening. We were all a bit tired after a long day.

(Relaxing after a long day in Shey Monestry - For people who haven't noticed us for but obvious reasons ,we are sitting on rightmost corner of the sitting alley.)

In the evening after returning to Leh we went for shopping in Leh main market. I incidently bought a Leather Hat (atleast it looked liked that) which would be accompaning me for the rest of the tour. In the night we had momos and “Godfather” beer for dinner. We went bed late knowing tough and interesting path lay ahead as we move to Nubra Valley tommorow.

Julley!!
